Die Römer in Oberösterreich, Archäologie im Schloss

Archaeology in the castle.

Excavations by OÖLKG and the University of Salzburg 2020-2023

Roman archaeology is an important research focus of OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH. Since 2021, students from the University of Salzburg have been visiting Upper Austria every summer to learn and perfect their archaeological skills. Following the investigation of a Roman estate in Königswiesen in Attergau (2020/2021) and the excavation of buildings along a main road in Lauriacum/Enns (2022), this year's focus was on a large building complex in Thalheim. This once towered over the Roman town of Ovilava/Wels. Archaeologists from the OÖLKG and the University of Salzburg will present these excavation projects at the themed evening "Archaeology in the palace: the Romans in Upper Austria". Selected finds will be on display in the foyer area of the palace museum with free admission.

In addition, a unique publication will be presented on the theme evening, 23 November 2023 at 6 pm: "Abenteuer Latein Faszination Archäologie" is both a book for interdisciplinary teaching and an exquisitely illustrated cultural history of Upper Austria's Roman heritage.
